Double Dragon II Characters
NES/Famicom versions

This is a list of characters that appear in the NES/Famicom versions of Double Dragon II: The Revenge.  The list also applies to the PC Engine version of Double Dragon II, except for the fact that the Right Arm and Ninja sub-bosses are missing in that version (except in the game's hidden sprite view mode).  However, the PCE version has a brief appearance by Big Boss Willy near the end of the game, which more than makes up for it.  Most of the enemies' info here (including their names) are taken from the Japanese Famicom version's and PC Engine version's manual, while information about the main characters (including the Phantom Doubles and the Last Boss) are taken from several facts presented in the game and Japanese manual.

BILLY LEE

NES version     PC Engine version

One half of the Double Dragons and a champion of justice.  He has the mark of the Flying Dragon.  He began his martial art training at age 12 and became a Sou-Setsu-Ken master at age 20.  He was recently responsible for the downfall of the Black Warriors gang.  But now he is looking to avenge the death of his girlfriend, Marian, by going after the group that killed her.

JIMMY LEE

NES version     PC Engine version

The other half of the Double Dragons and Billy's older brother.  He has the mark of the Frozen Dragon.  He operates the Sou-Setsu-Ken Dojo alongside his younger brother.  He was also responsible for the downfall of the Black Warriors.  He had a huge rivalry with his brother, but now he set aside his differences to avenge Marian's death.

MARIAN

Billy's girlfriend.  She was previously saved by Billy and Jimmy when she was kidnapped by the Black Warriors and has been grateful ever since.  She was also a cause of the rivalry between the Lee brothers.  She was recently killed by an unknown figure at the dojo when she was nursing injured students.  However, the Lee brothers can still hear her voice as if she was still alive.

WILLIAMS

NES version     PC Engine version

A grunt.  He sometimes uses weapons like knives and iron pipes.  He also likes to dash or do front flips while approaching the player.

ROPER

NES version     PC Engine version

A grunt.  He uses incendiary bombs and boomerangs.  His boomerang is an exclusive weapon that can't be used by the player.

LINDA

NES version     PC Engine version

A grunt.  Her weapons are chain whips and hand grenades.  She's the red spot among the enemy.

RIGHT ARM

NES version     PC Engine version

A Middle Boss.  His punching style is a bit different compared to other enemies.  His attacks are a bit quick too.
NOTE: This nameless character is obviously modeled after Jeff, a villain in the arcade version of Double Dragon I and II.

CHIN TAIMEI

NES version     PC Engine version

A strong middle boss.  He is a practitioner of Boujutsu (stick fighting).  He uses quick moves like somersaults and roundhouse kicks.
NOTE: Yes, this is the same Chin from the NES/GB versions of Double Dragon.  He was originally a boss character in the arcade version of Double Dragon II.

NINJA

NES version     PC Engine version

Their attacks are hard to avoid while they are dashing and jumping.  They throw shurikens and stab the player with their knives.  They are middle bosses.
NOTE: This nameless enemy was made specifically for the Famicom/NES version.  He is obviously a replacement for Big Boss Willy, the next-to-final boss in the arcade version of Double Dragon II.

BURNOV

NES version     PC Engine version

A boss character.  He resurrects himself when he is killed the first time.  He is a very large enemy.

ABORE

NES version     PC Engine version

A boss character.  He relies mostly on his brute strength alone.  His Shoulder Tackle is difficult to avoid.  His attacks do great damage.

BOLO

NES version     PC Engine version

A boss character.  He has a tall figure and quick attacks.  Bolo likes to grab the player up close and toss him away.
NOTE: Obviously a relative of Abobo (a villain from DD I).  Bolo, like Williams and Roper, borrows his name from the movie Enter the Dragon.  In Enter the Dragon, Bolo was played by none other than Bolo Yeung (formerly Sze Yang), who appeared in several other martial arts film such as Double Impact, Shootfighter and Bloodsport.

DOPPELGANGER

NES version     PC Engine version

Phantom doubles of Billy and Jimmy.  They use all of the Lee brothers' regular moves and have the ability to throw fireballs and possess the player from the inside.

MYSTERIOUS WARRIOR

NES version     PC Engine version

The mastermind behind Marian's death.  His real name and origins are unknown.  He uses the assassination arts of the shadow called Gen-Satsu-Ken, which is the appositive of Billy and Jimmy's martial art, Sou-Setsu-Ken.  He is also a master illusionist and has the ability to become invisible at will.
