Double Dragon NES Guide

Mission 3

Now some real trouble begins.  You will be instantly approached by a Will who's holding a knife.  Walk toward him and jump kick as soon as you are in range.  He won't throw the knife until you get close, and the jump kick will both disarm him and knock him down.
Pick up the knife while Will is down, then send it flying back at his face.
A sneaky Will is hiding in the far-right tree.  When he leaps at you with his stealthy flying-ninja-hiding-in-the-tree-ambush attack, counterattack with a kick to the back, which will knock him out of midair.  Finish him off with sitting punches.
More Wills will attack with knives.  Jump kick all of Wills to disarm them, then return fire with their own weapons.  Make sure not to get hit by any of the knives.
A bunch of Chins will be waiting in the next section.  Punches can be quite effective if you unload on them on Chin right as he stands up.  Otherwise use kicks.
If you have five hearts, you can sit on Chin while he is down.  Stand above him and press down to assume the sitting position, then punch repeatedly.  You must deplete most of Chin's energy to sue the sitting punches, otherwise he will simply throw you off.
A Will with a baseball bat is blocking the bridge.  Apparently it's a toll bridge and he's stationed there to collect payment.  Screw that.  Use a jump kick to knock his ass down, but don't take the bat.  This way your hands are free you can grab the knife on the other side.
Carefully jump over the bridge, then IMMEDIATELY jump kick the Will.  Pick up his knife, but don't throw it at him.  Kick him while he's holding it, then wait for the next set of goons to arrive.
Throw the knife you have been holding at Will (Get it?  At-Will?  Nevermind...).  Then take out his buddy while staying away from the water to your left.
If you don't have six hearts by now, start playing catch-up by punching the two sets of Wropers.  They may use jump kicks.  If they do, walk above or below them to avoid the jump kicks or simply counterattack with punches.
If you still don't have six hearts, you'll be in for a beating.  If you do, use backwards elbows by pressing A while facing away from Abobo.  Abobo is going to duck under most of your backwards elbows.  When he does, simply walk away from him while repeatedly elbowing.  This way, you stay out of range of his attacks, yet you'll still be able to hit him (I know that sounds odd, but trust me, it's true).  If Abobo gets too close, use a jump kick.
When jump kicking Abobo, always remember this rule: jump kick toward him, never away.  If you jump kick away from Abobo, he will slap or kick you out of midair.  After defeating two Abobos (remember what the Double Dragon patch says?) enter the doorway that Abobo smashed open in the rock wall.

Now you will be in the cave level, which is exclusive to the NES version.  Your first obstacle will be the falling stalagmites (or is it stalactites?).  Be on full alert while moving left and right to dodge the falling spikes.  Move right steadily, but make sure to focus on dodging the spikes first and foremost.  If you get hit even once, it's likely you'll get caught in a chain reaction of 3 or 4 multiple hits.
As soon as you make it to the edge, you'll be free from the spikes.  Make sure not to fall off or you will be in for a bit of back tracking (and the only appearance of the boulder in the game!).  Wait for the first platform to move above you, then jump straight up on to it.
When the second platform moves above you, jump straight above on to it.  Stay on this one and don't worry about the last platform; you don't need it.
When the platform moves all the way to the right, jump off it and onto the edge.  Make sure not to stand on the right edge of the moving platform or you may fall off while trying to jump.
Two Chins will appear from this door and attack.  You may be low on energy, depending on how well you handled the falling spikes, so use kicks to defeat them.  Enter the door they came out of.

Just when you thought it was over, there's more to explore!  You'll be greeted by multiple Wills, and some will be carrying dynamite.  Get them to throw the dynamite without hitting you, then pick it up or let it explode under them.  Kick the unarmed Wills while keeping an eye out for the ones carrying dynamite.
Keep walking right toward the edge of the cliff.  Walk right over the edge, causing Billy to fall, but don't jump kick!  If you don't do this quickly, the falling boulders will hit you from the left.  Keep walking over the edges.
When you reach the bottom, jump kick over the lava pits.  Remember to keep moving.
When you land on the longer stretch after the lava pits, watch out for the short section with falling spikes.   It is possible to walk past them without stopping and not even take a single hit.
Fall down your last set of cliffs until you reach the bottom.  Suddenly a Green Abobo will emerge through the rock wall, and he's as tough as ever.  Backwards elbows and jump kicks will keep him off of you.  You can actually use kicks safely against Abobo under two conditions.  First, you must be standing as close to him as possible, which keeps you just inside his range of attack.  Second, you can only get in close after you knock him down because if you approach him head-on, you'll be in for a beating.  When you're close enough, unleash your kicks.
You can also trap Abobo in the left corner and exploit a glitch in the game.  You see, despite that wall to left of Abobo in the picture above, he can actually fall through it to his death.  The game simply treats it like ledge.  If you pull this off, congratulations!  Another Green Abobo will emerge after you defeat the first one.  Defeat the second one and enter the doorway where the first one came out.

Climb down the ladder and face what seems like a never ending onslaught of Lindas.  Use kicks to defeat them and don't stop until they are all dead.  If you don't have seven hearts by now, you can use this large group of Linda to hopefully earn that last heart.
The entrance to Mission 4 is in the bottom right corner.  You can go the long way by climbing the ladders, or simply jump down off the right side to the next platform.
Climb down and enter the door to the last mission.
