By Johnny Undaunted Welcome to this small fan page dedicated to the other Double Dragons: Ryuuichi and Ryuuji Hattori from the Kunio-kun series. Ryuuichi and Ryuuji are obviously modeled after Billy and Jimmy Lee from the Double Dragon series. They are both martial arts experts and they have several Sousetsuken moves like the Whirwind Kick. They have appeared in several Kunio-kun games such as Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari and Bikkuri! Nekketsu Shinkiroku, as well as other games in the series. Let's take a look at the games they have appeared in. Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari (Famicom, PC Engine, X68000) Ryuuichi and Ryuuji made their debut in Downtown Nekketsu
Monogatari, the original Japanese version of River City Ransom. Unlike
their counterparts, Billy and Jimmy, we learn from Hasebe (Kunio's childhood
friend) that Ryuuichi and Ryuuji are bad guys and responsible for kidnapping
Riki's girlfriend, Mami. They don't appear in the game until you reach the
third floor of Reihou Academy. They're the last bosses before fighting
Yamada and they're the game's toughest enemies, especially when playing alone,
as they're quick and have a variety of attacks. There is a secret way to
defeat them, but I won't go into that right now. But if you manage to
defeat Ryuuichi and Ryuuji, then the last boss, Yamada, shouldn't be a threat to
you. Actually, Yamada is quite weak, especially compared to the
powerhouses that are Ryuuichi and Ryuuji. In the American version, which
is called River City Ransom, their names are changed to Randy and Andy, but
they're still tough. In the PC Engine version, when you fight Ryuuichi and
Ryuuji, you'll get to listen to an awesome arranged version of the Double Dragon
theme. Ryuuichi's Parameters: Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku (Famicom, Game Boy, PC Engine) Ryuuichi and Ryuuji returned to the Kunio-kun series in this game. Here
they were the captains of the Reihou team, ordered by Reihou's class president,
Toudou, to prevent Nekketsu from winning the athletic meet. They both have
similar stats, but during the fighting event both of them have the whirlwind
kicks, and Ryuuichi has the Jumping Knee Pad while Ryuuji has the Hyper
Uppercut. Ryuuichi's Parameters: Downtown Special: Kunio-Kun No Jidaigeki Dayo Zen'in Shuugou (Famicom, Game Boy) In Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki, Ryuuichi and Ryuuji played the roles of Tatsuichi
and Tatsuji, who eventually kidnap Kunimasa's lover, Okoto (played by Hasebe),
early in the game. They're as tough as their counterparts in Downtown
Nekketsu Monogatari. Eventually, when both of them are defeated, one of
them will join your party while the other will reappear as a single boss,
resulting in a fight between the brothers as you can see on the right
screenshot.
Bikkuri! Nekketsu Shinkiroku (Famicom, Game Boy) Once again Ryuuichi and Ryuuji Hattori are captains of Reihou's athletic
team, but not only must they compete against Nekketsu, Hanazono and Rengou, but
Oklahoma High School as well. On the screenshot to the top left we see
Ryuuji fighting in the Judo event against a member of Team Oklahoma named Jimmy.
Could this be the same Jimmy from Double Dragon? Well, he sure has his
eyes. To the right we see Ryuuichi doing the whirlwind kick against
Oklahoma member Alex. At the bottom we see Reihou's manager, Aihara
Shizuka, swinging the seesaw. What does the last picture have to do with
Ryuuichi and Ryuuji? Nothing really. I thought it was cute and was
cut from the American version. Don't expect to find Ryuuichi and Ryuuji in
the American version (Crash & the Boys: Street Challenge). They have been
removed in that version of the game. Kunio-kun no Dodgeball Dayo Zen'in Shuugou (Super Famicom) The Hattori Twins made their 16-bit debut in Kunio-kun no Dodgeball, the
16-bit Super Famicom update to Super Dodgeball. They don't look very
different from their 8-bit counterparts and they still have the same
Frankenstein-esque eyes Billy and Jimmy had in the NES version of DD I.
However, they're one of the game's most powerful players. To the left we
see Ryuuichi working as a sideman for Ryuuji and to right Ryuuichi and Ryuuji
are off-screen fighting against the Russian team and its Abobo-look-alike
leader, Mordov.
This was the first game in the series where Ryuuichi and Ryuuji look human
instead of like Frankenstein. In fact, they look more like Billy and Jimmy
than before (Ryuuichi has brown hair, while Ryuuji has blond). Once again,
Ryuuichi is the captain of Team Reihou with Ryuuji as second-in-command.
Ryuuichi's default defensive position is pitcher, while Ryuuji's is first base,
even though Ryuuji is a better pitcher than Ryuuichi. However, Ryuuichi
does have a special Burning Knee Bash attack that Ryuuji is missing. The
batting power of both is awesome as they're able to easily pull off homeruns
against the weaker teams. Overall, Ryuuichi and Ryuuji are in top shape in
this game. Kunio No Oden (Super Famicom) Ryuuichi and Ryuuji's appearance in Kunio no Oden simply consists of a small cameo appearance at the Vs. Mode screen (along with other characters like Aihara, Mami, Shinichi, Gouda, Misako and the Tiger Twins). Not much here. This was the Brothers' last appearance in a game and it's not much, as Kunio no Oden is basically a generic Puyo-Puyo-style puzzle game with food. Other Appearances I know there were a couple of Japanese comics (Manga) based on the Kunio-kun series (such as Ore wa Otoko Da and Nekketsu Shoubu). If anyone has information about Ryuuichi and Ryuuji's roles in this comics, please tell me about it. A few scans from their manga appearances would be nice too.
