DD III NES-exclusive villains:
(I apologise for really scraping the bottom of the barrel, now.)
Gibson: Mel Gibson, the psychopath who played the psychopath Mad Max – who is the other half of Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star (with Bruce Lee) – who is the prototype for Billy Lee.
Robinson: I think this one takes into account the game’s curse-of-the-mummy motif. There is an occultist theory that the young death of Bertram Fletcher Robinson, an English writer and journalist, was caused by a curse from the Unlucky Mummy artefact.
Quote from Wikipedia:
Robinson conducted research into the history of that artefact whilst working as a journalist … He became convinced that the 'Unlucky Mummy' had malevolent powers and died just three years later aged 36 years.
Daby: I think she’s named after Major William O. Darby – Not the actual historical figure, but James Garner’s portrayal of him, in the movie “Darby’s Rangers”. Why? Because Garner also played Marlowe, in the film of the same name - where Bruce Lee made his American cinematic debut, as the Kung Fu henchman, Winslow Wong.
(To my knowledge, this is the only time Lee ever appeared onscreen as a bad guy. Am I wrong?)
[Useless sidenote: Both Garner and Gibson have played the role of Bret Maverick.]
Which leaves us with Hiruko.
And the Super / Return characters, Steve, McGuire, Jackson and Duke.
There’s also the Gameboy DD II characters, Gordon and Anderson.
And then, we move to the newer stuff, which I’m not so interested in.
