Did I beat the game or not?

Ok so my friend and I have decided to play through all the Double Dragon games on his arcade machine.
We have to beat each game on one credit.
The question I have is this. Does it count for beating the game if one of the players dies before completion and the other is left but kills the final boss on his own.
Or do you purists believe that the game can only be finished if both players survive.

Technically, the only Double Dragon game where beating the final boss with both characters actually matters is Double Dragon Advance (the GBA one), since the ending actually changes if you get the last fight between the two brothers.
In the arcade versions, it doesn't matter whether you beat it alone or together. In DD1, you're forced to kill the other player anyway, while DD2 and DD3 gives you the same ending regardless.
In my opinion, if I'm playing the game with another player and then the other player dies during the process, then its only a partial accomplishment, since only one player actually finished the game.
