Combatribes coming to the Virtual Console

Post by Jonny2x4 »

Apparently Combatribes has been rated by ESRB for an upcoming Virtual Console release. I'm guessing this will most likely be a reissue of the SNES version, even though the Virtual Console has been getting arcade games as well recently. I don't get why they're releasing this before Double Dragon II (rights issues I assume), but whatever.

Hm, interesting find. I saw some of the sprites from this game used in the fan game "Double Dragon Revolution 2" and always wondered what game they came from but this answered my question. Thanks.

Combatribes plays more like an early 90's remake of Renegade than a Double Dragon game, although the main character do resemble beefcake versions of Billy and Jimmy. It has quite a few amusing moves like smashing your enemy's head into the pavement or swing them around by grabbing their legs, but there is no jump button and the enemies can be cheap sometimes. Its better than the arcade Double Dragon 3 at least.

Ah that's true. But it plays like a remix of renegade you say? Hm, I think I'll try it out then.

ULTRATRUTH.

And yeah, Blitz, Beserker and Bullova do bear more than just a passing resemblance to Billy, Jimmy and Sonny - even in their paletting (Blue guy with blonde hair, Red guy with brown hair, Yellow guy with darker skin).

As far as I was concerned, Combatribes always felt more like the rightful successor to DD II, to me, than DD 3. This was even before I learned that it was also a Technos project; and possibly the reason that they themselves weren't developing DD 3 for the arcade.

Which actually makes me wonder, what if they had? We'll never know, but my guess is we'd have a game that looks and plays more like the Combatribes, but still has the stupid search-for-magic-rocks storyline.

And if I remember correctly, wasn't there initially some intention to include cameos from the Combatribes, in DD Advance?

I think Combatribes was made before Double Dragon 3, or at the very least came out first. I remember seeing a scan of the game from some magazine archives calling Combatribes an "unofficial Double Dragon 3". They both run on the same engine at least.

Oddly enough, Kishimoto had nothing to do with the arcade version of Combatribes, but he did direct the SNES version for some reason.

Aahh Combatribes. An ok game but well... I would have felt better if the DD design team worked with the youngsters on 'Rosetta Stone' to make that game playable. Still, painting the streets with the enemies faces was pretty amusing.

Also, I believe this is probably my first post here so... Yo!
