Hyperfixation
Have you ever become so absorbed in a task, hobby, or thought that hours - or even days - slip by unnoticed? This intense focus is often referred to as hyperfixate, a state many neurodivergent individuals, especially those with ADHD or autism, experience. While it can feel rewarding in the moment, hyperfixate comes with potential risks that are important to recognize. It’s a deep, almost obsessive focus on a particular activity, interest, or idea, to the point where other aspects of life—like responsibilities, relationships, or self-care—take a backseat. Unlike general concentration, hyperfixation can be difficult to control or shift away from, even if you want to.
