Just a little while ago a program called "Blutrol" was released for the iphone/ipod/ipad which allows you to map touch screen controls to the controls on the icade controller for all i-devices.
I bought a small bluetooth controller setup called the icontrolpad for my ipod a long while ago as it was said early on that this was something that may happen. It cradles the ipod touch and/or iphone in a set of clamps that it comes with and makes the ipod look like a handheld device. It was a good product but it could only work on emulators or games that allowed you to map keyboard controls to them. Then they found a way to run the device in icade mode, so the controller now has access to every game that the icade arcade controller works for.. including blutrol!
It may seem a bit complicated but just know this: You can play double dragon iphone with physical controls now!
Videos work much better then explaining though lol, and here are 2 videos showing what the blutrol app does as well as a video I made myself showing Double Dragon iphone being played with physical controls on an hd tv! (Ipod with hdmi out cable)

I'm gonna see if I can get a hold of another ipod with the same program running and see if you can play two players with two different control pads to see if theres a conflict with the two bluetooth devices AND the ipod bluetooth syncing to each other for actual gameplay. Should be fine though, and if so.. its like a new console version of Double Dragon =O!
