Found box and manual scans of the Sega Mark III (Japanese counterpart of the Master System) version of Double Dragon on SMS Power.
http://www.smspower.org/Scans/DoubleDragon-SMS

The actual Mark III game itself is identical to the overseas Master System releases (to the point that all versions are compatible with the FM Sound module, an add-on which was only released in Japan). However, the cover artwork is different and the Japanese manual have a few more illustrations not used in the English version. A few observations.

1) The text in the "Story" and "Main characters" pages are taken almost verbatim from the Famicom version's promotional brochure (with only a few changes). It even ends with "In order to save Marian, Billy sets off alone to face the Black Warriors without his brother's knowledge", which is odd since this is a 2-Player version.

2) The name of Billy and Jimmy's style is spelled in the furigana as "Sō-Sai-Ken" instead of the more traditional "Sō-Setsu-Ken". This is likely due to the ambiguity in kanji pronunciations (a kanji character can have more than one pronunciation). The manual for the NES version also used "Sosaiken".

3) Willy and Jeff have their "correct" names in the Japanese manual. For some reason, their names were switched in the English manual (I'm guessing someone thought that "Willy" was a more suitable name for the Lee brother clone than "Jeff"). The manual also gives out Jeff's height and weight (along with those of the other enemies).

Thanks for posting that. Hey, did you catch that crazy crap we posted about the Genesis game's storyline?

[Edit]: By the way, do you have a better scan of the Famicom box for Double Dragon 1? I can't seem to find one anywhere.

My translation of the Mark III manual.

Story
New York, 199X. A city ruled by violence after the Nuclear War, where politics and law no longer mattered. It has reached the point where people formed gangs in order to survive.

On the outskirts of the city lived twin brothers named Jimmy and Billy Lee. The two brothers once operated a Kung-Fu dojo in the center of the city. Billy was lovers with Marian, an assistant instructor in the school's women division, although Jimmy was secretly in love with Marian as well.

The school was reduced to ashes during the nuclear war five years ago. But even with the inevitable lost of their school, the two brothers continued their training day by day without neglect.

But then one day an incident occurred that shook Billy and Jimmy. Marian was kidnapped by the Black Warriors!

The Black Warriors -- A criminal organization led by a man named Willy Mackey. They gradually expanded after the Nuclear War and are now the dominant gang of the city.

Where did they took Marian...? Without his brother's knowledge, Billy sets out to fight the Black Warriors alone and rescue Marian.

Player Character Introduction

Billy Lee (the protagonist)
Height: 175cm
Weight: 65kg
Successor to the Chinese martial arts of Sosaiken. He began his Chinese martial arts training with his brother at the age of 12 and has mastered various martial arts during the ensuing 8 years.

Jimmy Lee (Billy's older twin brother)
Sōsaiken is the complete regimentation of the martial arts. It is the unification of styles styles such as Shorinji Kempo, Karate and Tai Chi. Its signature technique is the Whirlwind Kick.
[Same description of Billy Lee and Sōsetsuken they used in the Famicom version's brochure. The par of the Whirlwind Kick being the style's signature move there only made sense due to the fact that it's the last move the player gets to learn.]

Hmmm, should we post a Japanese story page like we did with the arcade game?

Talking about box scans, I had seen that page before that you linked, but I can't seem to find a scan of the back of the box. Also, our scan of DD II for the Famicom is pretty low quality. Know of any higher quality (and larger) scans for that game?
