A lot of localized versions of many SNES beat-'em-ups had their female enemies replaced or removed for some reason. At some point Nintendo of America became uptight about the depiction of violence against women in their games. It wasn't just the transvestites in the first Final Fight, but the female enemies that were in Final Fight 2, Sonic Blast Man and Ninja Warriors Again were removed as well (it wasn't until the ESRB was established that they kept the female enemies in games like Captain Commando and Final Fight 3). Maybe Technos wanted to save themselves some trouble during the localization process by having no female enemies in Return of Double Dragon (personally I would've preferred Linda or Abobo over Jeff).

Super Double Dragon could've used more variety in enemies and stage designs in general. Even before Ebinuma published his commentary, I could tell the game (even in its more polished Japanese version) was released unfinished. You have only four small fry enemies and two of them are head-swaps of each other while another one is a palette swap of Player 1.

I actually love the minimalist pixel art closeup style of mid 80's NES titles. However, it's bizarre how we got these terrible blonde mullet generic buff dudes for so many box art covers when the Japanese originals were much better. Strider NES comes to mind. And Megaman 1 for NES=worst artwork ever for a game. However in the case of DD1, even the Japanese arcade flyer style is a bit wonky. I think "Spike and Hammer" is quite iconic, as is Konami's cheesey 1987-1990 arcade cabinet photo shoots.

The funny thing about the Japanese DD1 arcade flyer is that it was drawn by Koji Ogata, the game's actual sprite designer, who didn't have much experience drawing (since he was mostly a dot artist). Even Kishimoto himself makes fun of the flyer in his site by pointing out that Billy looks like a monkey.

The artwork for the DD2 and DD3 arcade fliers were done by different illustrators, as were the packaging/manual illustrations of the console version, which explains why they were better drawn.

By the way, the European version of Mega Man had an awesome cover artwork. It manages to pull off a "realistic" depiction of Mega Man without looking like ass.
